Amy Winehouse hidden treasures found in posthumous release
Artist extraordinare Amy Winehouse passed away untimely last July, joining a club of music icons who died and become legend at age 27.
Her music though will forever be deemed timeless.
A posthumous, third album from one of the most talented and original artists of the modern era is now out in the market, sure to thug at the hearts of countless fans enamored in her music and voice. Titled, “Lioness : Hidden Treasures“, this collection serves as a fitting testament to the artist remarkable for her beehive hair-do and respected for her musical ingenuity.
Producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi, among others specially close to the singer-songwriter, spent time listening over the many intriguing recordings that Amy had made, before, during, and after the release of albums “Frank” and “Back To Black”. It quickly became apparent to them that they had a collection of songs that deserved to be heard.
The 12-track, MCA Music release features previously unreleased tracks, alternative versions of existing classics as well as a couple of brand new Amy Winehouse compositions. Her duet with Tony Bennet for the 30s jazz standard “Body & Soul” has already captivated fans from the time they learned of the collaboration. This piece was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London last March and poignantly counted as Amy’s final studio recording.
“It was a thrill to record with Amy Winehouse and when you listen to the recording of “Body And Soul,” it is a testament to her artistic genius and her brilliance as one of the most honest musicians I have ever known,” said the highly revered senior act Bennett.
Revisited classics include “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow” and “Girl From Ipanema” featuring Nas. A reggae version of 60′s doo wop hit “Our Day Will Come” opens the album as the original demo recording of “Wake Up Alone” comes in powerfully raw right in the middle of the pack.
The Winehouse-penned “Between The Cheats” was recorded in London in May 2008 while “Tears Dry,” another of her tunes with its up-tempo version having appeared in “Back to Black” is presented here in its original version recorded in November 2005.
Completing the list are “Valerie,” “Like Smoke,” “Halftime,” “Best Friends,” and closing number “A Song For You,” her heartbreaking and emotional take of the Leon Russell classic made famous by Donny Hathaway who is her all-time favourite artist. The song was recorded in one take, with just Amy and her guitar at her home in London during the spring of 2009.
Speaking about the album Amy’s father Mitch shared,“I spent so much time chasing after Amy, telling her off that I never realized what a true genius she was. It wasn’t until I sat down with the rest of the family and listened to this album that I fully appreciated the breadth of Amy’s talent, from jazz standards to hip hop songs, it really took my breath away. If the family had felt that this album wasn’t up to the standard of “Frank” and “Back To Black” we would never have agreed to release it and we believe it will stand as a fitting tribute to Amy ‘s musical legacy.”
